How Many mAh Can a Power Bank Have on a Plane?
You flip your power bank over, see "20000mAh" stamped on the back, and go looking for the airline's answer. What you find instead is a rule written in watt-hours, a unit that means nothing until someone hands you the conversion. That gap between what is printed on the battery and what the airline actually enforces is where most confiscated power banks come from.

The Short Answer
Airlines set their limits in watt-hours (Wh), not mAh. Converted to the number printed on most power banks, here is where the lines fall:
Up to 100Wh, about 27,000mAh: allowed in carry-on baggage, no approval needed, no real limit on how many you bring
100Wh to 160Wh, roughly 27,000 to 43,000mAh: allowed only with the airline's advance approval, usually capped at two per passenger
Over 160Wh, above roughly 43,000mAh: banned from passenger flights entirely, cabin or hold
Almost every travel power bank on the market sits well under 100Wh, so this rarely bites regular travelers. It bites people carrying oversized "weekend camping" banks or old batteries with no label left to check.
Doing the Math Yourself
The formula airlines and manufacturers both use is simple:
mAh × voltage ÷ 1000 = Wh
Power banks run on standard lithium cells rated at 3.7V, so plug that in:
mAh × 3.7 ÷ 1000 = Wh
Run a few real numbers through it. A 10,000mAh bank works out to 37Wh, nowhere near the limit. A 20,000mAh bank, the size that charges a phone three or four times over, lands at 74Wh, still comfortably clear. Push it to 27,000mAh and you hit almost exactly 100Wh, the line itself. A standard travel power bank in the 10,000 to 20,000mAh range never gets close to needing this math, which is exactly why manufacturers build them that size on purpose.
Why Watt-Hours and Not mAh
This trips people up because mAh feels like the honest number: it is what is printed biggest on the box, and it is what you compare when buying. But mAh only measures how much electrical charge a battery holds. It says nothing about voltage, and voltage is what turns charge into stored energy.
Two batteries can carry the same mAh rating and hold very different amounts of energy if their voltage differs. Watt-hours capture that energy content directly, and energy content, not raw capacity, is what determines how much heat a battery releases if a cell fails and goes into thermal runaway. That is the actual safety question an airline cares about, so that is the unit they regulate by. mAh survived as a marketing number long after Wh became the number that matters at the gate.
Carry-On Only, Every Time
Whatever the wattage, a power bank never goes in checked luggage. Not the small ones, not the approved 150Wh ones, none of them. Security staff are not doing mAh-to-Wh conversions on the spot. They check one thing: the Wh figure printed on the casing. If it reads under 100, you walk through. If it reads 100 to 160 and you already cleared it with the airline, you are fine. If the number is missing, worn off, or was never printed at all, the safest assumption from their side is that it fails, and confiscation is the likely outcome regardless of what the actual capacity is.
That makes the label your entire defense. Buy banks with the Wh rating printed clearly, not just mAh, and if yours is legitimately over 100Wh, get the airline's written approval before you travel rather than arguing about it at the gate.
