Voltage Converter vs Travel Adapter: What's the Difference?

Somewhere in every airport electronics shop, a traveler is holding a 40-dollar voltage converter they do not need, right next to someone about to fry a hair dryer with a 6-dollar adapter that cannot save it. The two devices get mixed up constantly, and the mix-up goes in both directions. The difference takes two minutes to understand and can save you both money and a smoking bathroom outlet.

What does a travel adapter do?

An adapter changes exactly one thing: the shape of your plug. It lets a European two-pin plug sit in a British three-hole socket, or an American flat-blade plug in a round European one. That is all. The electricity coming out the other side is untouched.


So if you plug a 120V American appliance into a 230V European wall through an adapter, the adapter will happily pass all 230 volts straight into it. Adapters are shape translators, not protectors. What does a voltage converter do?

A converter actually changes the electricity. It takes the 230V coming out of a European wall and steps it down to roughly the 110-120V an American appliance expects, or the other way around. It sits between the wall and your device as a small box, usually with its own fan or a fair amount of heat.


That sounds like the safer choice, and sometimes it is. But converters come with real limits, which we will get to in a moment.


How do I know which one my device needs?

Read the label. Every charger and appliance has a small print block, usually near the plug or on the power brick. Look for the line starting with "INPUT".


  • "INPUT: 100-240V, 50/60Hz" means the device is dual voltage. It handles any wall socket in the world on its own. You only need an adapter for the plug shape.

  • "INPUT: 120V" or "INPUT: 230V" with a single number means single voltage. Plugged into the wrong grid, it will die, sometimes loudly.

Do you actually need a voltage converter?

Probably not. This is the 90 percent answer: modern electronics are almost all dual voltage. Phone chargers, laptops, tablets, camera battery chargers, e-readers, electric toothbrush charging bases, most of them have been built for the global market for years. Check the label anyway, but expect to find "100-240V" on nearly everything with a USB port or a power brick.


For a typical carry-on full of electronics, a plug adapter is the only thing standing between you and a fully charged trip abroad. The converter can stay on the shop shelf.


The exceptions: heat and motors

The trouble starts with anything that heats up or spins. Hair dryers, straighteners, curling irons, travel kettles, and shavers with a real motor are the classic single-voltage suspects. Cheap ones especially are built for one market and one voltage only.


Here is the honest advice: do not solve this with a converter. Use the hotel hair dryer, or buy the dual-voltage version of the appliance instead. Something like a dual voltage travel hair dryer (paid link) has a small 125/250V switch on the handle and needs nothing but a plug adapter. Same idea exists for straighteners. It weighs less than any converter and cannot be plugged in wrong.


Why do converters work so badly with hair dryers?

Because of watts. A hair dryer pulls 1500 to 2000 watts. A transformer that can carry that continuously is a heavy brick, not a travel gadget. The compact "2000W" converters you see in shops are usually electronic converters that chop the voltage instead of transforming it. That trick is acceptable for simple heating elements in short bursts, but it can wreck electronics, and even with heat appliances these boxes overheat, cut out, or slowly cook themselves.


So the paradox: the devices that genuinely need voltage conversion are exactly the ones converters handle worst. That is why frequent travelers simply stopped carrying them.


Quick reference: adapter, converter, or leave it at home?

Adapter only:


  • Phone, laptop, tablet, camera charger

  • Electric toothbrush, e-reader, power bank (check the label once)

  • Dual-voltage hair dryer or straightener (flip the voltage switch first)


Leave it at home:


  • Single-voltage hair dryer, curling iron or straightener

  • Travel kettle and clothes iron without a dual-voltage label


Converter, reluctantly:


  • An old single-voltage shaver or a gadget you truly cannot replace


Before your next trip, spend two minutes reading the input labels on everything you plan to pack. Buy one good plug adapter for your destination, and if a beloved appliance turns out to be single voltage, replace it with a dual-voltage twin instead of babysitting a converter.
